Terminology Persona #2: The Support Engineer
At Fodina, we’ve worked with terminology management for over 20 years. In those years, one thing in particular has become clear: consistent terminology is crucial for many different roles across a wide range of industries.
Today, we want to introduce Ravi, a support engineer who’s there when customers need help the most.
Ravi’s been in support for a few years now. He’s great at problem-solving and knows the product inside out. But that doesn’t mean terminology is always easy.
His daily mission:
✅ help users solve problems quickly, whether it’s basic setup or advanced configuration
✅ communicate clearly with both customers and internal teams, especially when something breaks
✅ stay up to date on the latest product updates and features, even when they change overnight
✅ provide input for FAQs and support articles, with the right terminology
But here’s what slows him down:
❌ inconsistent terms across the interface, help center, and tickets. Is it a “node,” “unit,” or “device”?
❌ unclear language from other teams. Developers say “instantiate,” marketing says “launch,” customers say “start”
❌ time wasted translating “tech speak” into customer-friendly language, especially under pressure
❌ engineering renames things, but the support resources don’t always get updated, leading to outdated automatic replies and customer confusion
With structured and well-defined terminology in place, Ravi gets:
✔️ clarity. Terms are defined, approved, and aligned across departments
✔️ faster responses. No more second-guessing what to call things or how to explain them
✔️ better collaboration. Less “translation” work between teams
✔️ fewer support tickets. Clear, consistent terms in UI and documentation reduce user errors in the first place
Last but not least, he gains happier customers. Because when the language is clear, so are the solutions.
For Ravi, terminology is about preventing misunderstandings, saving time, and delivering better support. Stay tuned as we introduce more professionals who benefit from structured terminology!
